Five Things To Remember On May 1





1. Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, president of the USCCB, said in appointmenting new members to the National Review Board, that it "plays a vital role as a consultative body assisting the bishops in ensuring the accountability of our procedures in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.”

2. Pope Francis tweeted today a message to political leaders, saying, "I ask everyone with political responsibility to remember two things: human dignity and the common good."

3. The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Serve will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2014, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching.

4. The president of Catholic Charities USA presents a moral case for raising the minimum wage.
